Writer: Association SecretaryAssociation Secretary

In a significant development for the aging population, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has officially released an international standard for elderly care robots, led by China. The new standard, titled IEC 63310, outlines performance guidelines for active assistive living robots used in interconnected home environments.

This standard is designed based on the physiological and behavioral characteristics of the elderly, providing benchmarks for the design, manufacturing, testing, and certification of various types of elderly care robots. It aims to steer the global elderly care robot industry towards healthy development.

Focusing on the needs and characteristics of older adults in daily life and health care within smart home environments, the standard categorizes the functions and performance of elderly care robots according to the levels of assistance required by senior users. Beyond general requirements such as usability, reliability, accessibility, energy consumption, and noise levels, it also specifies technical requirements for health status and emergency monitoring services provided by the robots, communication support with family members and healthcare providers, diverse support for household tasks, entertainment, home management, and caregiving activities, as well as mobility assistance and information management performance.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that by 2050, the global population aged 60 and above is expected to reach 2.1 billion, including 426 million people aged 80 and older. As individuals age, the elderly often experience varying degrees of functional decline or disabilities in perception, physical abilities, and cognition. The introduction of elderly care robots not only alleviates the caregiving burden on families and society but also supports older adults in maintaining a dignified and high-quality independent life at home.
